2008 Minnesota Legislative Update

Minnesota is facing a budget shortfall of almost 1 billion dollars. The state constitution requires a balanced budget. Therefore, the State Legislature must balance the budget during this session and make up for the shortfall.

Governor Pawlentyís approach to budget problems continues to be to cut services, cut taxes, and borrow from reserves. This would do little to address a long term solution to our revenue crisis.

Minnesotans and Local 320 members have continued to feel the pain of the budget cuts. Services to communities have been cut, and we are expected to do more with less. Meanwhile, Minnesota needs a fair and equitable tax system that would permanently address the issue of revenue shortfalls. Our legislature needs to restore local government aid, close corporate tax loopholes, and roll back income tax cuts that favored wealthy Minnesotans.

Local 320 and our lobbyist are keeping a close eye on legislative initiatives. Neither political party seems to be interested in addressing tax reforms. While we are opposed to budget cuts, if they should occur, we will insist that they be done in a fair manner, with no one public agency being cut more than another.

As always, we ask each member to stay in touch with their legislators throughout the session to support our position.
